TOW-A-TON-OF-TOYS DECEMBER 2009 (12de Jaar)

TOW-A-TON-OF-TOYS DECEMBER 2009 (12th Year)
The “Tow-a-Ton-of-Toys” has come and gone. It was my first time organizing and running it and I must admit that I was a little apprehensive, but, as true caravanners, help was a phone call away. So, my very grateful thanks to Elinor, Rudy, Sheila, Guy, Jim, Vicky, Jackie, David, Dawn, Matthys, Annie and of course my Margaret for manning the caravan. Your precious time spent at the caravan is much appreciated. On Monday 7th December I collected the caravan, kindly loaned to us by Gavin Kiloh from Durban Caravan & Outdoors. My first stop was at the Kloof Pre-Primary School where the Principal Colleen and her enthusiastic young charges deposited lots of beautifully wrapped toys into the caravan. Thank you boys and girls, Colleen and your staff. After parking the caravan in the area where we have parked for the past 11 years, I received a phone call the next morning from Eugene, P.R.O. at the Mall asking me to urgently move it, directing me upstairs to a site next to the Post Office and inside the Parking garage. Apparently a sign writer was to work on the windows of the Vineyard Bottle Store. Well, to all who helped and suffered from the heat and constant exhaust fumes, thank you for a difficult task carried out uncomplainingly. As far as the collection of toys and clothing was concerned, I was thrilled at the generous response of lots of toys and books in good condition and also surprised at the amount of quality clothing handed in. These also included a wonderful donation from Penny McGregor and her Grade 5 pupils at Westville Senior Primary School which I had collected the week before, having to use 2 cars to fit it all in! During the collection period the caravan was filled to capacity and emptied five times – that’s a lot of toys and clothing! The recipients of all these goodies were absolutely thrilled and ever so grateful. They included the following: Phakamisa (Margaret), 1000 Hills Community Workers (Gill), Heart to Heart International (Gary & Annette Hare, and Helga), Hlengi, one of the Go-Go ladies representing Lily of the Valley, and Peter from the BP garage at the Kloof Mall. A new recipient of a few bags of toys and clothing was the Arauna Ark Ministries in Cliffdale, where Jan & Joy, Esme’ & Rory, Jackie & David, Jas and Greg gave a Christmas party for the residents and children from the surrounding area. Well, despite the changing of the position of the caravan I can report that it was a successful “Tow-a-Ton-Of-Toys” and I must thank all the generous people of Highway who supported our Region’s community outreach project once again.

Dear Siegie
Thank you so much for giving our children in the valley the gift of toys, it is humbly appreciated. With all this bad weather we have had and many of the mud huts falling down the clothes came in great use. We are so blessed to have people like you manning the caravan and receiving toys and clothes on our behalf. Give yourself a hug from us and have a wonderful Christmas and new year.
Warm Regards
